Language Plan for Galway City

At Bronnadh Ghradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh recently, Aire Stáit sa Roinn Ealaíon, Oidhreachta, Gnóthaí Réigiúnacha, Tuaithe agus Gaeltachta, Seán Kyne TD announced Gaillimh le Gaeilge as the ‘Ceanneagraíocht’ to prepare and implement a language plan for Galway city under the Language Planning Process. This will be undertaken in collaboration with stakeholders such as

Galway City Council.  He went on to say that the language plan for the city is certain to help and strengthen the Irish language and  will also help to consolidate Galway’s cultural,

Irish brand for the future.

 


Ionad na Faiche Móire/Eyre Square Centre announced as the ‘New Tribe of Galway’

Ionad na Faiche Móire/ Eyre Square Centre, located in the heart of Galway City, was named as the overall winner of Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh- Galway’s bilingual business award.

 

Aire Stáit sa Roinn Ealaíon, Oidhreachta, Gnóthaí Réigiúnacha, Tuaithe agus Gaeltachta, Seán Kyne TD made the annoucement at a special awards ceremony that took place in the Salthill Hotel on Monday the 15th of May 2017  A reflection of the high standard of entries this year is Bronnadh Speisialta na Moltóirí, a special award designed to acknowledge a business who has entered the Gradam for the first time and has achieved a very high standard which could not go unrecognised.  This award, sponsored by Judy Greene Pottery was presented to Mary’s Fish, Gaillimh.

The Moltóirí also bestowed a University Scholarship sponsored by Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge, Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh on a business that is making a special effort to promote and use the Irish language with their clients and tenants. PorterShed was presented with a two year scholarship on the language acquisition course, ‘An Dioplóma sa Ghaeilge’, a university qualification from NUI Galway.

Gaillimh le Gaeilge in search of a new venue for our ‘Lónta Gnó’

Gaillimh le Gaeilge are always on the lookout for new venues to host their monthly Lónta Gnó. Therefore, we are searching for restaurants GALC_web_DEISand hotels in Galway City who use Irish on their menus on a regular basis or who would be interested in doing so.

Gaillimh le Gaeilge are available to advise restaurants on possible layouts and on the amount of Irish suitable for their menus also provide a free translation service.

All establishments with bilingual menus are listed on  ‘Gaeilge à la Carte’ – a list of restaurants and hotels in the city which is available. If you would like to use Irish on your menu and be included on this list, please contact Gearóidín on +353 (91) 568876 or email eolas@gleg.ie
